Deep Question about UML Emabedded Modeling

Hello, i am in a little of trouble.

im starting a project, for an Embedded system
ARM TS7200,
this system has a Data-Engine which Design and Implementation was done through Structured Modeling, not Object Oriented.
my job is to do another layer of software over the existing one, which will let people access the Data-Engine and monitor it, remotely, through WEB.

so my question is...
can i model my job with UML?? even when my project uses underneath an existing layer of software that was done structured?
if not, what type of modeling should i do then?
thanks in advance, best Regards
Cristobal

Re: Deep Question about UML Emabedded Modeling

Hello,

What structured Modelling tool (?) was used?

In general, I would say "yes" to your question.
If you talk about UML and embedded, there is only one tool which will do the job: Rhapsody by Telelogic/IBM. You'd need an adapter so you can program your ARM; we sell those.

If you already have code underneath, that will save you work - provided the code works. That will give you a jump start. Rhapsody can deal with legacy code.

If the code was created with a tool and its supports some export (XMI?) you could try to import stuff. Alternatively you could have Rhapsody reverse engineer your code.

I have no idea on what you are doing or trying to achieve; I can not say if you do need multi-tasking or can live without: for both kinds we have a solution.

Re: Deep Question about UML Emabedded Modeling

Hi Christobal

IMHO you can use UML for all your Software Stuff. Using UML does not necesarily means that you must use OO, you can design structured as well.
Since your software will be a layer over the current one I would try to obtain as much info as possible in my UML model so that I can easliy create references to my new model elements. This is possible with many UML tools, Rhapsody is a good one, you could use the gateway to do it, but with some manual work it can be done with other tools too.
If you give some more details about your applications we could discuss some more detailed model examples.

best regards

Walter
